Bled cemetery extension Location; Bled, Slovenia Client; City of Bled Area; 6900 m2 Project; 2001 Project team; Landscape architecture; Matej Kučina, Marko Studen (Scapelab) Collaborators; Domen Šega, Jernej Černe The concept of the new cemetery is based on the blending of the larger public, outer area towards the smaller, more intimate inner area. The gradation of the elements follow from the unity, recognizable from outside as special, isolated consecrated spaces in a cultural landscape, across the entry and sepulchral field, to the single grave. The entry, monumental section is surrounded by marked and isolated sections, articulated with grass sepulchral fields and the repetitive planting of hedges or cone-shaped plants. The entrance to the cemetery is through a fenced-in entry corridor and from here to the individual sepulchral units. Within the sepulchral unit the graves are arranged in lines in unified sepulchral fields. The elements of orientation within the sepulchral unit are various hedges, following beside the sepulchral fields. The different units change through time from a symbolic orchard to sepulchral fields.
