Orchard

Community orchards

Brdo is a huge neighbourhood whose uniform landscape arrangement connects individual sets of buildings designed by many architects. For various reasons, the project dragged on for an incredible 12 years from winning the competition in 2005 to its completion in 2017. In addition to the epic duration of the construction, we will remember it for two solutions that bring the Brdo neighbourhood a new quality of living.

The coexistence of a large number of people requires some tolerance and cooperation, some sense of commonality, which is slowly losing its role in today’s emphasized individualism. In order to encourage a sense of community and cooperation, we designed a number of informal orchards of various fruit trees throughout the neighbourhood, the fruit they bear is intended for residents. These orchards encourage communication and collaboration, both in terms of maintenance and care and later on with the harvesting.

The problem of surface backwater at a nearby hill was effectively solved by arranging a larger pond that channels this water. In a very short time the pond became an important biotope and one of the main attractions of the neighbourhood.
